How to avoid surprise moving charges
A clear written scope matters more than a reassuring slogan.

Before accepting a quote, check the crew size, work included, estimated time, minimum charge and any extra fees. Ask what happens if an elevator is unavailable or the inventory changes.
Put the important details in writing
Your agreement should identify the business, services, prices, payment terms and service dates. Ontario’s moving guidance says consumer moving contracts over $50 must be written. It also explains limits on charging above an estimate and agreed changes for additional services. Read the current provincial guidance before signing.
Report access and inventory honestly
Extra stairs, an unmentioned storage locker, a long walk from the loading spot or furniture that needs dismantling all change the work. Photograph and list these early. If plans change, ask for an updated written scope and price before the extra work starts.
Clarify damage responsibility
Ask who is responsible during carrying, loading and transport, what protection applies and how claims are handled. Rental vehicle protection and protection for your belongings are different questions. Do not assume a marketplace, rental agreement or home policy covers every part of the move.
Keep a usable record
Save the quote, agreed changes, item photos and messages. Take condition photos before work begins. If something goes wrong, explain the issue in writing and keep copies of the response.
